28. Poison in bird food: a widespread problem in our living environment

Poison in bird food: a widespread problem in our living environment Only the organic seed mix from Vogelbescherming is poison-free and contains no measurable residues of pesticides. This is evident from research by Pesticide Action Network (PAN).
This organisation had nine brands of bird food randomly tested for pesticides. Eight other samples did contain residues of these, such as insecticide and an antifungal agent. A low concentration of an auxiliary substance of insecticide was found in the non-organic seed mix from Vogelbescherming. This is not registered as a pesticide. It is still unclear what the consequences are for birds if they eat this food.
More research is needed for this and Vogelbescherming will have this carried out more quickly. Poison in nature Vogelbescherming finds the results of the research worrying. For people who want to help protect birds, it is annoying and confusing that there are many types of food in circulation that are not good for birds. Vogelbescherming believes it is important that more research is
done. Poison is already present everywhere in our living environment. It can be in the ground or spread through the air. Unfortunately, birds that find their own food in nature also ingest poison. Our nature is not poison-free, not even in large nature reserves. We are very concerned about this and continue to work for a poison-free living environment.
Poison-free bird food.
The organic bird food from the Bird Protection Association was the only one that came out well in the test and is free of pesticides. The Bird Protection Association also calls on other sellers of bird food to opt for poison-free bird food. Only together can we ensure a healthy future for birds and people.

Bird-friendly environment
But… the very best way to help birds find food is to improve their
habitat. Birds like a varied garden with native plants and shrubs,
fallen leaves under shrubs and plants, berries, insects, a patch of grass and preferably not a very neatly raked garden. And preferably not a completely tiled area. Source: Bird Protection 4 November 2024 Hoping for poison-free winter bird food,
